Legendary Boston Pops to begin 2007 Holiday Tour in Fort Smith.

The Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart will launch their ever-popular Holiday Tour through the Northeast, Midwest, and South with their debut performance in Fort Smith, AR at the Convention Center Exhibition Hall on November 25, sharing a cherished New England Christmastime tradition with audiences around the country. This family friendly evening will include a visit from Santa and the audience will love the Christmas sing-along.


The Boston Pops Christmas concerts began in 1974 with a three-concert series at Symphony Hall. Since then, public demand for the performances has increased dramatically, and this holiday season the Boston Pops will offer 38 concerts at Symphony Hall, in addition to its tour performances.  Each year, the Boston Pops performs for a total audience of nearly 900,000 people in Boston and across the country, and reaches millions more through its television broadcasts.

Niña Replica sails into Fort Smith port!

The most historically accurate replica of a Columbus Ship ever built plans to sail into Fort Smith, November 29 and stay in port until December 6. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by the Riverfront Park and take a tour of this historical ship. Feel the history as each visitor explores, the one that Christopher Columbus called his favorite. Niña one of three ships made the entire First Voyage, bringing Columbus safely home…


Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for Senior Citizens over 60, $3 for children 5-16 and children 4 and under are Free. Hours of operation are from 9:00am- 5:00pm every day the ship is in port.


Arkansas-Missouri Railroad offers Winter Excursion

Are you looking for something new this winter season? Arkansas-Missouri Railroad are expanding their service to include roundtrip winter excursion from the Frisco Depot in Fort Smith to Winslow. This is the result of good ridership on Fort Smith excursions this past summer. Come out and enjoy the winter scenery along the Arkansas Riverfront to the scenic Ozark Boston Mountains. The train will depart on Saturdays at 11:00am from January thru March. Sunday afternoon excursions will begin again in the summer months.

These hours will be in effect until the week before Christmas.

Fort Smith CVB Announces the R.O.S.E. Award Winners!  

A number of individuals and organizations were honored recently as recipients of the Fort Smith Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “R.O.S.E.” Awards for their contributions to the hospitality industry.

The ROSE awards (Recognition of Outstanding Service Excellence), program is designed to honor those exemplify excellent customer service as ambassadors of their companies or the City.


Recipients of the 2007 ROSE Awards are:

Hometown Hospitality Hero of the Year

Arkansas Bandmasters Association- Prissy Buchanan

This award is presented to an individual or team who invites and hosts a large group of visitors in the Fort Smith Area. Ms. Buchanan has been instrumental for years in attracting and hosting the Arkansas Bandmasters Association (ABA), annual conference in Fort Smith.  ABA will return to downtown Fort Smith in the summer of 2008.

Guest Service Provider of the Year

Holiday Inn Express- Todd Remy

This ROSE recognition is presented to the individual, staff or team who, in the course of their work or volunteer services, consistently provide exceptional guest and customer services. In recognition for their consistent level of customer service, since the hotel opened in May 2002.                                          

Corporate Partner of the Year

This award recognizes a company or organization who contributes their time and resources to enhance the Fort Smith area’s ability to successfully host groups of visitors. The Times Record has a strong reputation as a community partner, having served as the Presenting Sponsor of the Fort Smith Golf Classic since it’s inception in 1998. Times Record staff also played a key role in Fort Smith hosting the highly successful 2007 convention of the Arkansas Press Association for the first time in more than a decade.

This honor is to recognize an organization, hotel, restaurant, attraction, or retail business, which provides exceptional quality service to the visiting public and Fort Smith area citizens. Over the past few months the Holiday Inn City Center staff has hosted a number of very successful conferences while simultaneously undergoing a complete renovation to restore the hotel to its original glory.

Polly Crews Hospitality Person of the Year

Carolyn Joyce a/k/a/”Miss Laura”

This award is presented to an individual who has spent many years in service to the citizens and visitors to the Fort Smith area and has had a positive impact on tourism and hospitality in the Fort Smith area.

Named in honor of Fort Smith tourism pioneer, Polly Crews, this honor recognizes an exceptional level of commitment to the hospitality industry.   Carolyn Joyce of the Advertising and Promotion Commission staff created the role of “Miss Laura” more than 15 years ago and still provides first person tours of the Fort Smith Visitor Center (“Miss Laura’s Social Club) to tour groups, in addition to her duties on staff as the Director of Sales for Group Travel. She also created the musical comedy troupe “Miss Laura’s Players” to attract and entertain visiting tour groups.


Tentative Dates Announced for 2008 Fort Smith Regional Air Show


May 17 & 18, 2008 have been selected as the tentative dates for the biennial Fort Smith Regional Air Show.


Preliminary plans call for the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to again be the featured attraction at the Fort Smith event which is one of the largest air shows of its kind in the nation that is still free of charge.
