Bridging the Past, Present and Future: Recent Works by Sandra Ramos

Fort Smith Regional Art Museum - 1601 ROGERS AVENUE FORT SMITH, AR 72902

Art Exhibition

March 29, 2013 - July 7, 2013

http://www.fsram.org/

Thursday – Saturday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sundays 1 - 5 p.m.

This exhibition is comprised of prints, video and objects created by Cuban artist Sandra Ramos who resides in Havana, Cuba. For over twenty years this artist has reflected in masterful prints the conflicting experiences of living in her beloved homeland with all its many challenges. Her work often takes a narrative form in which she depicts herself as a child-like explorer of modern day Alice in Wonderland. Ramos's prints and mixed media works feature exquisite draftsmanship and use of the color and naiveté, tempered by wit and irony.

Her unique style and graphic and design skills have made her work much appreciated internationally. Her work can be found in prestigious permanent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Fuchu Art Museum Tokyo. Ms. Ramos formerly taught at the Higher Institute of Art, Havana and regularly presents at conferences and workshops internationally.

This exhibition reflects the mordant wit for which Cubans are famous, as well as a kind of nostalgia and exuberance particular to the artist. Viewers will be given a look at Cuban life today and some aspects of the impact and interaction of that country with the United States as seen through the sensitive eyes of one of its top creators. It will be a revelation to some and a delight to all who marvel at the unique artistic expression from places near and far -or, as is the case with Cuba "near yet far."
